Weatherwood Stains are reactive stains, meaning that they work within pieces of wood naturally to age the tannins. These reactions provide unique, truly oxidized looks, and each species of wood will look different. Sections of wood within each project may also have subtle variation when stained. Stains are suited for unsealed interior and exterior applications, hardwood, softwood, veneer, and both new and reclaimed untreated woods. The Stains are available in 5 variations:

  • Light Oaking- Works well on all wood but looks especially nice on hardwoods. Oaking gives the appearance of a silvery driftwood grey (however ultimate color is species-dependent). For 3 different looks- wipe the stain back off before it absorbs fully for a light touch, saturate the wood and let it fully absorb for a medium-grey, or apply a second coat for a darker grey.

  • Pining- Suits all woods but works especially well to change low-tannin woods like Pine, Spruce, Poplar, and White Fir. Higher-tannin woods may darken significantly with this stain. Low-tannin woods may appear warm-grey. Apply a second coat for a slightly darker look (ultimate color is species-dependent).

  • Salvage- Intended for tannin-rich woods, this stain subtly enhances each piece of wood's natural beauty, tone, marks, and age with light greys. Woods stained with Salvage may have highs and lows, lighter areas where there is sapwood, and enhanced knots (ultimate color is species-dependent).

  • Reclamation- Works well on all woods, with high variation between species. In general it produces a medium-grey tone which may vary from having a brown to blue undertone (however ultimate color is species-dependent).

  • Restoration- Works well on all woods but looks especially nice on hardwoods. Restoration provides warm brown-grey results (ultimate color is species-dependent). For 3 different looks- wipe the stain back off before it absorbs fully for a light touch, saturate the wood and let it fully absorb for a medium brown-grey, or apply a second coat for a darker brown-grey. Woods will become progressively more grey with each added coat.

To apply:

  • Stir Stains thoroughly from bottom-up (and re-stir every now and again during use). Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding with 80-grit sandpaper with and against the grain.

  • Use a brush, roller, or paint sprayer to apply one liberal coat in the direction of the grain, drenching the surface evenly to ensure even application. We love using the Annie Sloan Flat Brushes, Artisan Enhancements® Topcoat Brush, or Foam Rollers to apply all Stains. For large-scale projects, use a giant floor brush to apply.

  • Do not wipe stain off (unless working with a stain that allows for a lighter application by doing so).

  • May be applied directly on-site of an exterior project and won't harm ground or plant life- however you may encounter staining of concrete or siding, so apply protection as needed. Must apply when temperatures are between 60-90 degrees F, and when relative humidity is below 85%. Dry time may be extended due to humidity.

  • 1 qt. covers approximately 100 sq.ft. of smooth surface, and 1 gallon covers approximately 300 sq.ft. of smooth surface.

  • Please test as you go to ensure you are happy with how the stain is reacting with your specific project across different areas

For use over unsealed hardwoods, softwoods, reclaimed wood, and veneer.

*Seal with Weatherwood Topcoats- Varnishes work well for high-traffic and high-moisture interior projects, while Exterior Waterproofer is essential for exterior projects. Weatherwood Topcoats will preserve your oxidized wood looks from the outside-in, however all Stains are topcoat-compatible (see our last photo of examples of woods sealed with Annie Sloan Soft Waxes). Be advised that some topcoats may affect the Stain appearance/color.
